Overhead Crane Gearbox: Modular Design and Low Maintenance
The crane gearbox is a core component of lifting equipment, specifically designed to meet high load and high-precision operation requirements. It efficiently converts the motor’s high-speed rotation into low-speed, high-torque output through a high reduction ratio, ensuring stability and safety during the lifting, moving, and positioning of heavy loads.
DGCRANE offers the following overhead crane gearbox types for different transmission layouts, mounting arrangements, and equipment interfaces. You may select any category to view its detailed specifications.
Modular Overhead Crane Gearbox
Modular overhead crane gearboxes are standardized, integrated drive units. Unlike conventional gearboxes, this series of overhead crane gearboxes uses alloy-steel gears with carburized and quenched tooth surfaces for high hardness, wear resistance, impact resistance, and reliable performance in demanding industrial applications.

Core Advantages
- Standardized modular construction with a power range of 0.12-200 kW and flexible gear ratios. Units can operate independently or be combined for special reduction requirements.
- Precision-ground, carburized, and hardened gears provide excellent toughness, wear resistance, overload capacity, and impact resistance for heavy-duty, frequent start-stop operation.
- Optimized helical gearing ensures smooth meshing and low transmission losses. Gearbox efficiency can reach 95%, while worm-gear units can reach 98%, supporting stable long-term operation.
- Compact, lightweight construction with simple maintenance. With correct selection and maintenance, major components typically provide at least 25,000 operating hours, excluding consumables such as lubricant, oil seals, and bearings.
Operating Conditions
- Can withstand axial load no more than 5% of radial load.
- Operating ambient temperature: -10℃ ~ 40℃, altitude up to 1000 m.
- Capable of rotation in both forward and reverse directions.
Transmission Configurations
- Parallel-shaft helical design with offset input and output shafts.
- Multi-stage transmission with helical and spiral bevel gears, featuring 90° right-angle output design.
- Pure helical gear coaxial transmission. Input and output shafts share the same axis with an extremely compact, simple structure.
- Combined structure of front-stage helical gear reduction and rear-stage worm and worm gear drive.
Applicable Scenarios
Widely used in overhead and gantry cranes—ranging from standard light to medium-duty and heavy-duty applications to those involving demanding reversing operations or requiring smooth, constant-speed movement—these systems feature a compact design and, in some configurations, offer self-locking capabilities, making them well-suited for environments with limited space or stringent equipment safety requirements.
Hard Tooth Surface Overhead Crane Gearbox
Hard tooth surface overhead crane gearboxes feature welded steel plate housings that undergo annealing for stress relief. The gear teeth are carburized and quenched—or surface-hardened—and then ground. Consequently, they offer high load-bearing capacity and excellent wear resistance, ensuring stable quality and reliable performance, though the manufacturing process is relatively complex and costs are higher.

Core Advantages
- Gears are made of carburizing alloy steel such as 20CrMnTi or high-strength steel like 35CrMo. A hobbing process using pre-grinding coarse hobs is adopted to improve gear accuracy, and gear profile modification is performed, achieving a gear mesh contact ratio of 0.98, which greatly reduces vibration and noise.
- Gear hardness exceeds 350 HBW, typically ranging from 58 to 62 HRC. The gears can withstand shock torque generated during startup, braking, or sudden load changes, and resist tooth surface plastic deformation and spalling caused by impact.
- Surface quenching forms a dense hardened layer on gears. Compared with soft-tooth-surface gears, they deliver superior wear and corrosion resistance.
- The fatigue life reaches over 10⁷ cycles, ensuring long-term stable equipment operation and fewer shutdown maintenance events.
- At the same power rating, they can be 20%–40% smaller in volume than the soft tooth surface overhead crane gearboxes, making them suitable for installation in space-constrained locations.
Operating Conditions
- Gear peripheral speed ≤ 20 m/s
- High-speed shaft speed ≤ 1500 r/min
- Operating ambient temperature: -40℃ ~ 45℃
- Capable of bi-directional rotation
Structural Design & Mounting
- Three-point support design with flexible vertical, horizontal, or angled mounting.
- Rigid base-mounted design for horizontal installation.
Applicable Scenarios
It is suitable for overhead and gantry cranes with minimal constraints regarding installation space or angles, as well as for industrial scenarios requiring conventional horizontal mounting and high load-bearing stability.
Medium Hard Tooth Surface Overhead Crane Gearbox
The gear shafts and gears undergo a process of quenching and tempering followed by surface hardening. This results in a higher load-carrying capacity and a longer service life compared to the soft tooth surface overhead crane gearbox, effectively reducing the frequency of downtime for maintenance. Furthermore, these components offer enhanced fatigue resistance and wear resistance, leading to a lower failure rate. The unit operates smoothly with low noise levels and is easy to install.

Core Advantages
- Gear shafts and gears are mainly made of 42CrMo and 35CrMo steel, reaching 300–350 HBW after heat treatment. This ensures core toughness while improving tooth-surface hardness and wear resistance, reducing tooth breakage, slippage, and wear during long-term operation.
- The transmission ratios are properly distributed across all stages, with a wide nominal ratio range of 10–200. This covers more operating conditions, from high-speed light-load to low-speed heavy-load applications, offering greater versatility for most industrial uses.
- The mechanical transmission efficiency reaches up to 96% for two-stage gearboxes and 94% for three-stage models. High transmission efficiency and low energy loss make them well suited for continuous, long-duration operation.
- The gearbox features a compact overall structure, flexible mounting options, and a relatively small footprint. It facilitates on-site installation and layout while making routine inspection and maintenance more convenient.
Operating Conditions
- Gear peripheral speed ≤ 16 m/s
- High-speed shaft speed ≤ 1500 r/min
- Operating ambient temperature: -40℃ ~ 45℃
- Capable of bi-directional rotation
Structural Design & Mounting
- Three-shaft cylindrical helical gear, horizontally split, fully enclosed type.
- Vertical configuration with externally meshed involute cylindrical helical gear design.
- Tapered hollow shaft, mountable directly onto the driven shaft.
Applicable Scenarios
It can be used for the travel mechanisms of overhead and gantry cranes subject to frequent starting and braking, as well as for casting overhead cranes.
Soft Tooth Surface Overhead Crane Gearbox
Soft tooth surface overhead crane gearboxes feature a relatively low tooth-surface hardness, typically below 300 HBW. They are characterized by a simpler manufacturing process and lower procurement and maintenance costs; however, their load-carrying capacity is inferior to that of hard tooth surface or medium hard tooth surface gearboxes, and their wear resistance is poor. Consequently, long-term operation under overload conditions should be avoided.

Core Advantages
- Gears are commonly made of 45 medium-carbon steel or 40Cr alloy structural steel. After quenching and tempering, they typically achieve ISO Grade 8–9 accuracy, meeting the requirements of lifting equipment under general-load conditions.
- The simple structure and mature manufacturing process ensure strong interchangeability, flexible installation, and easy maintenance. It effectively reduces equipment investment costs while meeting operational requirements.
- The gear teeth offer excellent toughness and naturally run in during the initial operating period. This helps reduce noise and vibration, ensuring smoother and more stable transmission.
Operating Conditions
- Gear peripheral speed ≤ 20 m/s
- High-speed shaft speed ≤ 1500 r/min
- Operating ambient temperature: -40℃ ~ 45℃
- Capable of bi-directional rotation
Structural Design & Mounting
- Three-point vertical or horizontal design with optional angled mounting.
- Vertical shaft-mounted involute cylindrical structure.
Applicable Scenarios
Primarily applied to equipment such as overhead and gantry cranes, and also suitable for space-limited scenarios requiring vertical mounting.
